STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — Local educators are nearing the COVID-19 vaccination finish line as school districts begin to announce plans to hold vaccine clinics for those who want the shots.
Stevens Point Area School District Communications Coordinator Sara O’Donnell says they have been working with local health officials and Marshfield Clinic for several weeks to prepare for this very time.
“We’ll be hosting the off-site clinic with Portage County Health and Human Services and Marshfield Clinic for employees who are interested in receiving that vaccination,” said O’Donnell.
Teachers became eligible for the vaccine as part of the current group on March 1st so O’Donnell says they already have some employees who have received one or both doses of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines. That means the clinic will be for those employees that have not received any doses.
“Our goal here really was to try to make this as simple as possible [for employees] given the amount of other things on their plates,” added O’Donnell.
Teachers will receive clinic sign-up information in their email. O’Donnell says the vaccine will not be required, but nearly 75% of their teachers have indicated they would like to get the shots.
The district expects they will be getting doses of the Moderna vaccine, meaning a second clinic will have to be held at a later date. That date has not been set.
O’Donnell adds that the district has been assured they will be getting a “complete order” of vaccine, meaning there will be enough for everyone who wants a shot but hasn’t gotten one yet.
Stevens Point won’t be the only district that has its clinic next Wednesday. D.C. Everest officials also say they’ll hold a clinic for employees on March 17th. Two days later, on March 19th, Wisconsin Rapids officials are planning a clinic for their teachers.
WAOW TV reports that the Marshfield School District will hold a clinic on March 16th.
WSAU News has reached out to officials with the Wausau School District to inquire about their plans for a clinic.
