WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — There’s an offer on the table for a former government building in Wausau.
Monday evening the Wausau City Council met for a special meeting regarding the sale of city-owned property at 510 South 32nd Ave. The property in question is the former Westside Fire Station 2 that was replaced with a new station built along Highway 52 that opened this summer.
City Economic Development Manager Sean Fitzgerald explains what the offer is for the vacant building. “There was an offer that was received last week Thursday from a prospective buyer looking to purchase the property for $200,000 cash. And the only contingency to that, which is expected, is it’s a contingency related to zoning approval for that property,”.
The building was put on the market in October of 2020 after it was cleared of all firefighting equipment by commercial realtor Hocking Real Estate. For the past 6 months, the property has had no other offers but several people have looked at the facility, which would likely need a new roof and boiler in the next few years.
The buyer who has put out the cash offer on the building would like to use it as a storage space for a personal car collection that would not be open to the public. Neither the realtor nor the proposed buyer was present at the meeting to answer any questions from the City Council.
With few details on the nature of the use of the building, some alders were concerned with authorizing the sale of the building. District 8 Alder Sarah Watson questioned why the sale was moving so quickly when the offer was received just the week prior.
“Why is it so quickly coming up? I know it looked like it was 9 days or something but is there a way we could like counteroffer and extend that? So we can maybe have them attend council next Tuesday and discuss it then.”
The council unanimously voted to table the approval of the sale of the property until their regular meeting on March 23rd after over an hour of discussion on the property.
