ROTHSCHILD, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — Another of the former Shopko buildings in Central Wisconsin has found its new purpose.
Late last week officials with the Tomah VA and Village of Rothschild announced that the former big-box retailer will become the new location of the Wausau-area VA Clinic, allowing the facility to provide expanded services.
“We really want to make sure that every veteran gets the care that they deserve and treatment that is in line with what they expect,” Scott Gomer, Public Affairs Officer at Tomah VA Medical Center, told WAOW TV.
In addition to the expanded services, the location will allow the clinic to offer Veterans easier access and parking.
Re-purposing the building is expected to begin soon, with a grand opening sometime in 2022.
Shopko closed all of its stores in 2019, moving their opticians to smaller, stand-alone and strip-mall settings. The Wausau Shopko building is set to become climate-controlled storage and smaller retail space, while the Plover location will become a mini-mall that includes an expanded O’so Brewery along with an Anytime Fitness location, restaurants, and a coffeehouse.
