STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — Another Central Wisconsin community is being warned of car part thefts.
According to Stevens Point Police Lieutenant Dana Williams, catalytic converter thefts are on the rise in the Stevens Point area. In a news release, Williams writes that the department has dealt with 9 converter thefts in March alone.
Most of those catalytic converter thefts have come from Toyota Prius’s but other makes and models have been stolen as well. The Police Department believes those stealing the converters are a pair, with one person using a jack to lift up the car and cut off the catalytic converter while the other keeps watch.
Catalytic converters are usually stolen for their precious metals which have risen in price this year. Converter thefts have been on the rise in other Central Wisconsin communities including Wood County and Wausau.
The Stevens Point Police Department recommends that if your catalytic converter is stolen, limit walking around the vehicle and call the police so they can collect evidence like potential fingerprints.
The Department also recommends parking your vehicle in a well-lit area if not in a garage and look out for vehicles you don’t recognize driving around your residence multiple times a day to dissuade a potential theft.
