WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A date has been set for the closing of a downtown Wausau landmark.
Saturday, April 10th, will be the last date where the Wausau Center Mall will be open. The mall officially opened in August of 1983 and is being demolished later this year after several years of decline.
The current owner of the mall Wausau Opportunity Zone Inc. (WOZ) announced the closing date in a press release on Wednesday afternoon. WOZ plans to begin the transformation of the property in May with the first phase of demolition.
Dave Eckmann, President of WOZ Inc. says in the release, “The Wausau Opportunity Zone, Inc. will continue to work closely with our community partners, such as the City of Wausau, Wausau River District, the Greater Wausau Prosperity Partnership, the Greater Wausau Chamber of Commerce, and the downtown business community to ensure a collaborative process as we move through our next steps in our collective efforts to build the Best Small City in America,”.
HOM Furniture and the two parking ramps adjacent to the mall will stay open following the official closing. Plans for the property include an urban hub with housing, boutique retail, hospitality, and gathering spaces.
