STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The Stevens Point Police Department issued a reminder to residents to not touch any stray weapons or other out-of-place items following the spring snowmelt.
According to a Facebook post on Thursday officers have found two guns in public locations in the last two weeks; one on a lawn at the UWSP campus and another in a city park.
Officers say it’s common for the annual snowmelt to reveal hidden trinkets and residents are encouraged to contact officers if they find what appears to be lost property such as a wallet, keys, or cell phone. But if they find something dangerous such as a knife, gun, or other weapon don’t touch it and call the police.
If you are ever unshure if an item that you’ve found is safe to handle, don’t touch it and call the police immediately.
