We continue our look at the music of 50 years ago…..
1971 was a good year for Rod Stewart. He released the solo LP the vaulted him to stardom. “Every Picture Tells A Story” later in the year while also fronting the band Faces that dropped a couple of LPs too including “Long Player” in February.
It was an interesting dynamic for Stewart and the band….he had separate recording contracts for his solo work and his work with Faces which often led to the best stuff being held back for his solo records including the band’s recording of “I Know I’m Losing You” from the Long Player sessions.
And the band would get credited on Stewart’s solo records as backing musicians not as the popular band they were. And it was a pretty solid band indeed.
After Steve Marriot left the Small Faces to form Humble Pie, the band became Faces and featured future Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood, top notch bass player Ronnie Lane, keyboard ace Ian McLaglen who played on dozens of rock records in the 70’s and drummer Kenny Jones who later replaced Keith Moon in The Who.
Long Player was their second LP and featured a collection of rockers and bluesy ballads that used Stewart’s voice to it’s utmost. It also included a cover of Paul McCartney’s ‘Maybe I’m Amazed”.
Here it is…enjoy Stewart as he’s about to explode…and without the glitter and Hollywood baggage he aquired later. Plus a bunch of Rock & Roll pros plying their craft.
