GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) — The Wisconsin Public Service Commission has announced that the winter utility disconnect moratorium will end on April 15th, meaning now is the time for customers who may be behind on their utility payments to make arrangements with their service provider to make sure they don’t lose service.
“We encourage our customers to reach out to us right away,” said Wisconsin Public Service spokesman Matt Cullen. “Because then we can start the process of working with them to provide that payment arrangement [or] working with them to provide energy assistance.”
Cullen says for WPS a service disconnection is always the absolute last resort. “The most important step that our customers can take is to reach out to us right away so we can discuss options with them as well as the potential for financial assistance.”
Additionally, those who may have recently fallen on hard times due to the COVID-19 outbreak should reach out as qualifications for the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program have been adjusted. Meaning additional customers could be eligible for assistance and not even know it.
“If our customers reach out to us we can work with them and provide that information about that program and how they may be able to go out and apply to receive energy assistance,” he added.
Around 1% of WPS customers are currently in danger of having their services disconnected.
Cullen also reminds WPS customers that they also offer budget billing, which averages out a customer’s energy use to keep payments predictable during the winter months. They also offer energy efficiency tips to help customers decrease energy bills.
