WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) — Health officials in Wood County have confirmed a case of the B.1.1.7 variant of COVID-19 in a resident.
The strain, also known as the UK variant, is more easily transmissible and does come with a higher fatality rate than the original strain.
Officials did not release when the person tested positive, or where they lived.
Variant strains of COVID-19 are confirmed by full sequencing of the test sample, which is only done in a handful of samples.
DHS data shows there have been 171 positive COVID-19 tests from Central Wisconsin that have been fully sequenced. Nine of them have been identified as UK variants.
All of the COVID-19 variants (UK, South African, and Brazilan) have been recognized in the state of Wisconsin.
