MADISON, WI (WSAU) — A Wausau man will serve two and a half years in federal prison for falsifying tax documents as part of a scheme to steal more than $1.5 million from his employer between 2007 and 2017.
Leonard Kersten was sentenced earlier this month to 30 months in prison after pleading guilty to tax evasion.
According to investigators, Kersten wrote checks from his employer to himself and his wife over ten years. He then covered up those actions by altering the company’s books to make it seem those checks were written out to suppliers.
In addition to the prison time, Kersten and his wife will have to pay back some $348,000 in past-due taxes to the IRS.
The 55-year-old is to report to federal prison by late May. He will also serve three years of probation following his release.
