How about no ‘mow’ foolishness?
The City of Wausau is now enabling unkempt lawns by passing the “No Mow May” resolution. Plant some perennials and annuals that attract bees and won’t contribute to blight in your neighborhood. Examples include: Hyssop, Aster, Basil, Black-Eyed Susan, Lilac, Lavender, Oregano, Sage, Zinnia. There are so many options that are better than a weed-filled lawn that will spread throughout the neighborhood!
For those that don’t want dandelions in their yards, here’s a DIY recipe for weed killer that’s safe for humans and pets:
- 1 gallon white vinegar (You could use another type of vinegar, but white is the cheapest and easiest to buy in large quantities)
- 2 cups Epsom salt (or iodized salt)
- 1/4 cup Dish soap
Combine the ingredients in the order listed in a large garden sprayer.
Replace the lid on the sprayer, and gently swirl around the ingredients. You don’t want to shake it so vigorously that the soap foams too much. Pump up your sprayer and spray away like a Ghostbuster. You should be able to see a difference within 8 hours of spraying the DIY weed killer.
