WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau residents can now officially place orders for rain barrels as part of the city’s recently approved rain collection program.
Public Works Director Eric Lindman says for any resident in the city that has a green thumb, the program is worth looking into.
“It’s a great way for people to save a little money by not using water from the tap to water plants and do outside landscaping,” said Lindman. “I think anytime we can reuse water it is a great thing.”
In addition to saving money on water bills, the barrels will also reduce some strain on the city’s stormwater infrastructure.
Lindman adds that you don’t necessarily need to be a full-blown handyman to install the barrels either. They come mostly set up, but some additional hardware is required to install them to a home’s current gutter system. Videos on how to install them can be found at the city’s website.
Wausau residents can purchase up to two barrels valued at $75 for $50 each. The city’s water utility will cover the remaining $25.
Non-residents are also welcome to purchase barrels if they like, but they will pay $75 instead. Residents who want to purchase additional barrels would also pay $75 for each one after two.
The city is taking orders online via credit or debit card. There is an option to pay by check as well. The city’s ordering period ends on May 24th at 11 PM. Pickup will occur at the city’s public utility facility on a Saturday in June.
