CLEVELAND, OH (WSAU) — The Green Bay Packers made six selections on the final day of the 2021 first-year player draft in Cleveland on Saturday.
Players who will now begin their careers in the green and gold include:
Royce Newman (Round 4, pick 142)- OL, Ole Miss
T.J. Slaton (Round 5, pick 173)- DL, Florida
Shemar Jean-Charles (Round 5, pick 178)- DB, Appalachian State (NC)
Cole Van Lanen (Round 6, pick 214)- OL, Wisconsin (Green Bay native)
Isaiah McDuffie (Round 6, pick 220)- LB, Boston College
Kylin Hill (Round 7, pick 256)- RB, Mississippi State
Van Lanen played high school football for Bay Port and is the first Green Bay native to be drafted by the Packers in more than 30 years. That was Wisconsin QB Bud Keys in 1988, who was taken in the 10th round but never played in a regular-season game.
Van Lanen told ESPN that he almost didn’t answer his phone when the call came in because his phone flagged the 920 number as “scam likely,” but when he answered it was GM Brian Gutekunst and HC Matt LaFleur asking him if he wanted to be a Packer.
The Packers will announce their Undrafted Free Agent (UFA) signings later this weekend or early next week.
The NFL will announce the 17-game regular-season schedule on the evening of May 12th. Single-game tickets will then go on sale shortly thereafter, with the league aiming to have full stadiums for the 2021 regular season.
