STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The proposal for a RoboCop statue in Stevens Point has gone from a funny viral story to a real possibility.
Mayor Mike Wiza says while the issue hasn’t been a priority for him; he’s obviously got bigger fish to fry, he has enjoyed working in the background to connect those who have made the project a priority.
“It’s on the back burner for me, but other people have just taken it up and run with it,” said Wiza. “Anything someone wants to do that’s going to make our community a little better I’m in favor of; and if I can help clear the path I will certainly do that.”
Fundraising efforts for the statue could begin later this spring with a retro video gaming event. “We’re going to break out the Commodore 64’s and the Apple version too and play the old 8-bit RoboCop video game. It’ll be a tournament and we’ll be giving away- get this- the RoboCup.”
Details like when and where the tournament will take place are still being finalized. Wiza encourages anyone who may want to participate to watch the city’s social media channels for details and registration.
Wiza adds that while he is a classic video game enthusiast he wasn’t aware that a RoboCop game existed until recently. He also showed off a 3D-printed RoboCop head, which could be incorporated into the RoboCup trophy for the tournament.
There’s still no word on how the statue would be made or where it will go. Some have suggested putting it in a city park, others would like to see it placed downtown. Some have also offered the city’s police station as a good place for it.
Wiza adds that it is now “pretty obvious” that Detroit will keep their statue.
