RHINELANDER, WI (WSAU-WXPR) – If you’re hoping to give mom a bouquet of freshly cut flowers this Mother’s Day, you might have a harder time than normal finding what you’re looking for and prices will likely be higher as well.
That’s because a flower shortage is putting some florists in a tough spot.
Ruth Hempel is the owner of Forth Floral in Rhinelander. “We grow some of our own flowers and that helps a lot, but we haven’t been able to get things like other years.”
Hempel says flowers like roses and carnations are harder to come by this year, which is driving prices up.
The shortage stems from pandemic shutdowns, which began just over a year ago.
At the time restaurants, retailers, and offices that regularly decorated with greenery didn’t need to anymore. So farms in California and South America planted fewer flowers. “With flowers you have to plant months and months ahead so things that happened last summer are affected now.”
Along with pandemic-related transportation problems and bad weather events, a flower shortage is finally coming to fruition – just in time for Mother’s Day.
