We continue our look at the music of 50 years ago……
When the LA funk/soul band War released their 3rd album in 1971 the title itself signified a change of direction. Simply titled ‘War” it showed a band that was moving on without Eric Burdon. The veteran British rocker with the bluesy growl had used the band as his backup group on two LPs and even had a spacy. psychedelic hit the previous year with this….
War was a band featuring a bunch of solid players including harmonica ace Lee Oskar who’s signature sound always let you know you were listening to a “War” song.
This LP didn’t yield any hits, although the band had a bunch later in the decade. One of the songs on the album was Sun, Oh Son which earned a spot for an extended jam on their excellent “live” album which came out in 1973.
It also included a rough-edged Wilson Pickett like rocker called “Lonely Feelin”…and a weird spoken word thing called “Fidel’s Fantasy” which included not so veiled criticism of the Cuban dictator.
Here is a band spreading their wings and learning to fly…which would happen very shortly. Enjoy.
