CINCINNATI, OH (WSAU) — The Brewers used a three-hit performance from Kolten Wong and Christan Yelich’s first home run of the season to secure a series win over the Cincinnati Reds 9-4 on Sunday afternoon.
Wong’s 3-5 performance included a two-RBI triple in the 6th and two runs scored. Yelich and Avisail Garcia each added two hits as well.
Wong also scored the game’s first run on an RBI walk drawn by Travis Shaw. The newest Brewer Willy Adams, acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays late last week, followed that with a two-RBI single to give Milwaukee a 3-0 lead after one.
Garcia recorded a two-run shot in the 3rd inning to put the Brewers up 5 before Cincinnati responded in the bottom of the frame.
Yelich added an RBI single in the 6th. His solo home run came two innings later in the 8th.
Brad Boxberger picked up his first win of the season despite throwing just one-third of an inning (the final out of the 5th) in a pitcher of record oddity. Milwaukee starter Freddy Peralta was pulled after 4.2 innings, meaning he fell one out short of qualifying for the win despite allowing just three hits and two earned runs.
Because he didn’t qualify, the next pitcher out stands to benefit and that was Boxberger who struck out the lone batter he faced to close out the 5th. Trevor Richards, who was also acquired from Tampa Bay this week, pitched the next two innings and Alec Bettinger was called on to finish the game.
With the win, Milwaukee climbs back to .500 at 23-23 heading into a four-game set against NL West division contenders San Diego which begins on Monday. Coverage on WSAU starts at 6:05 PM.
