MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU) — The rash of catalytic converter thefts has now spread to Marshfield, where police say at least one incident was reported last week on 6th street, and another may have been attempted.
Officers say a vehicle parked in the 500 block of West 6th Street had its catalytic converter removed. The owner of that vehicle then alerted his neighbors to the issue and later told police it appears thieves tried to hit another vehicle in the area but were unsuccessful.
Police are encouraging residents to either park in well-lit areas or a structure like a garage to keep from having the parts stolen.
Previous catalytic converter thefts have been reported in Madison, Wausau, and Stevens Point.
Catalytic converters remove toxins from vehicle exhaust. Thieves find them desirable because they contain several valuable metals like platinum and palladium. A single part can be worth up to $1,800 according to the Madison Police Department.
