RHINELANDER, WI (WSAU) — Officials with the Oneida County Sheriff’s office have announced that one of their own died in an ATV accident in Iron County this Memorial Day weekend.
Sergeant Anton “Archie” Keelin of Hazlehurst was killed when his ATV went off a trail in the Town of Oma. Lifesaving efforts were administered at the scene, and Keelin was then transported to Aspirus Hospital in Ironwood, Michigan where he died.
Investigators say it appears that Keelin’s ATV struck an object in the trail, throwing him off. He then struck a tree. Although he was traveling in a group, no one witnessed the accident.
“We ask for understanding and privacy for the family, partners, and friends who are grieving,” said Oneida County Sheriff’s officials in a statement on Facebook. Officials in Iron County are continuing to investigate the accident along with the Wisconsin DNR.
