WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — A local volunteer group is completing its first build of the season to help others who struggle with mobility issues.
Cindy Albright is the first recipient of the year for a wheelchair ramp outside her home done for free by Ramp Up Marathon County. She tells WAOW-TV that the work Ramp Up Marathon County is doing is life-changing. “Being disabled, I don’t have the funds to do something like this, and there’s a lot of people, contractors, who won’t even attempt doing one of these so it is definitely life changing for me,”.
More than 20 volunteers have spent three days building the ramp from Cindy’s house to her independence. Ramp Up volunteer and construction leader Ray Nowaczyk says the group loves what they do to help others in the community. “It’s just a good feeling to do this, all our guys enjoy doing it. They enjoy, that the recipients are very happy,”.
Albright says the new ramp at her home and being installed at others will help her and others with mobility issues live their lives again. “To be able to get out of their home, and to be able to live their life again, it’s amazing,”.
While this is the first Ramp Up project in Marathon County this year it won’t be the last as plans are in the works for another four or five ramps in Marathon County. Ramp Up works with the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Central Wisconsin for referrals, screenings, and application processing.
