GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) — Jordan Love said all the right things on Wednesday following the second day of the team’s mandatory mini-camp.
The second-year QB out of Utah State has been taking snaps with the starting offense in the absence of NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers.
“I have to get myself ready to play,” he told reporters after Wednesday’s workout. “[I have to] be able to get out there and take charge of the team and perform at a high level.
“I’m getting a lot of extremely valuable reps I might not have been getting under normal circumstance. I was drafted to play QB here, so I could definitely be ready by week one.”
Love added that he hasn’t been following the situation between Rodgers and the team very closely.
“I don’t listen to any of the outside noise. I’m trying to stay true to myself and understand that I can’t control anything that’s going on outside of the building. I’m focusing on how I can get better each day,” he said.,
Rodgers has reportedly been unhappy with the Packers’ upper management though he hasn’t directly addressed the issue. He did provide a small amount of insight to former ESPN SportsCenter anchor Kenny Mayne during his final show with the network; saying his beef is more about a “philosophy” than the move to draft Love.
“It’s about character, it’s about culture, it’s about doing things the right way,” said Rodgers in that interview.
Packers GM Brian Gutekunst has reportedly met with Rodgers and admitted that he could have communicated the team’s plans to target Love better than they did.
Rodgers has not reported to any of the Packers voluntary or mandatory offseason workouts. The team could fine him over $90,000 for missing this week’s activities but could also mark him as an excused absence. Should he miss any of the team’s training camp this July and August it would cost him $50,000 per day no matter if the absence is considered excused or not.
