WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau bus riders will return to depositing fares this fall.
Fare collection was suspended for Metro Ride buses in March of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic to keep touchpoints within city buses at a minimum. But with COVID-19 case numbers continuing to trend downward in Central Wisconsin, fare collection is back on the table in Wausau.
At Thursday afternoon’s Transit Commission meeting Transit Director Greg Seubert recommended resuming fare collection in September to get things as back to normal as possible. “School will be back in session. Things will be somewhat back to normal.
“I personally would like to start collecting fares again on September 1st. We would like to get things kind of back to normal. Get our route map and schedules recirculated and collect fares and do all the normal things that we do.”
The Transit Commission unanimously voted to resume fare collection in September. Between now and then Metro Ride will be working with outlets to distribute bus passes over the next two months.
