WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Wausau man who told police he was leaving the scene of an accident to get “more booze” will serve four years in prison for his 7th OWI.
Randy Svendsen, 54, was found guilty of causing a crash near the intersection of 17th and Sherman in December 2019 after a woman called 911 to report her vehicle was struck by a driver who fled the scene.
Police eventually identified the vehicle as Svendsen’s and attempted to catch up to him at his home. Instead, they found him laying on the sidewalk nearby with numerous wounds.
Officers called for an ambulance. While they were interacting with him, he reportedly admitted to having too much to drink and said he was leaving the scene of the crash so he could get “more booze” from a nearby gas station. Officers say he also told them that he had “too (expletive) much” when asked how much he had been drinking.
Svendsen was given credit for more than a year and a half served in jail while he was being held on bond. Additionally, his driving privileges have been revoked for three years, and he will serve five years of extended supervision upon release.
