MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) — The Milwaukee Brewers had to make more roster moves on Monday after closer Josh Hader was the latest to test positive for COVID19.
Hader joins Hunter Strickland, Jake Cousins and Jandel Gustave going through the protocols.
To help out the short bullpen Milwaukee swung a trade with Toronto and brought back former closer John Axford in exchange for cash considerations. He had been a Blue Jay TV commentator when he pitched for Team Canada this summer and rediscovered his fastball. Since Axford was on a minor league contract the deal could be made after the trade deadline.
The Brewers also reinstated Jace Peterson from the IL on Monday and sent Pablo Reyes back to AAA.
Axford got into Monday night’s game but struggled in the 9th inning and had to be removed after 22 pitches with elbow soreness. He will have an MRI today.
Axford holds the single season record for saves for the Brewers with 46 in 2011. He is 2nd all-time to Dan Plesac with 106 saves. He hadn’t pitched in the majors since 2018.
