WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Wisconsin Woodchucks swept a doubleheader from Battle Creek on Thursday night and moved into first place in the 2nd half of the season ahead of Fond du Lac. They also are now tied with the Dock Spiders for overall record this season.
The Chucks were down 8-2 in the fourth inning in game one before mounting a furious comeback and pulling out a 9-8 victory. They scored five runs in the 6th inning to pull ahead.
Clayton Mehlbauer had two home runs in the victory. Chase Bessard was 3-4 with three RBIs. Mosinee native Jace Baumann picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief.
In Game 2 the Woodchucks score four runs in the second inning and went on to an 11-2 rout.
It was a good night for the three UWSP Pointers on the Woodchucks roster. Aaron Simmons was 2-3 with a home run and two runs scored. Wausau West grad Payton Nelson hit a two-run pinch hit homer in the 7th inning. And JD Schultz pitched two scoreless innings with three Ks.
Chase Bessard was 2-4 with an RBI and Harrison Long drove in 2 runs.
The Woodchucks will host the Bombers again tonight at Athletic Park. Pregame at 6:20 on 93.9 The Game.
