WAUSAU, WI (EVERYTHING EVERGREENS.COM – 93.9 THE GAME) – Some things will look familiar, some things will seem different.
Opening night of the D.C. Everest football season will mark the return of general admission tickets, the student section, and the band and dance team getting to stay for the entire game. Even football practice looked more familiar leading up to tonight’s game, with players back in the locker room and not having to dress in their cars.
What’s unfamiliar includes a Thursday night game, and an uncommon opponent. There’s very little history between D.C. Everest and Green Bay Preble. The teams scrimmaged against each other three years ago. Back then Preble was big, and Everest had trouble running the ball against them between the tackles.
Preble played spring football last season. They beat Green Bay Southwest and Manitowoc Lincoln; those teams managed only 3 wins between them. Preble lost several non-competitive games against much tougher competition, like Bay Port, Fond du Lac, and Neenah. The Evergreens, 4-4 last year, accomplished more during the fall season. Preble had a winning record in 2019 (6-5) and in 2018 (6-4), while playing in the much tougher Fox River Classic Conference.
Preble’s outlook for this season is hard to assess. As a larger school, many of their starters have to wait for their senior year to get meaningful varsity experience. Preble’s starting quarterback, top rusher, and leading receiver have all graduated last year. Everest’s biggest advantage will be experience. Everest has a returning quarterback, and their leading all-purpose yards leader back. Preble will have many players making their first varsity starts.
The Evergreens should win their opener, but there are caveats. Preble has size. Teams that played in the spring may have a built-in advantage. Conditioning for a hot, humid opener is an unknown for both teams. And Everest has some new faces on its offensive and defensive lines.
