SCHOFIELD, WI (EVERYTHING EVERGREENS – 93.9FM THE GAME) – It was the turning point of the game: Green Bay Preble, trailing by 13, would get the ball to start the second half. A touchdown would have made it a one-score game. Instead, a stand-out individual play sealed the Hornet’s fate.
On 3rd and 2, Preble attempted a screen to the far sideline. It was a bad pass by quarterback David Torres, over the head of his intended receiver. Everest defensive back Alec Schuster jumped the pattern, intercepted the ball, and ran it back for 35-yards for a touchdown.
The play gave Everest a 29-7 lead, and the game was never in doubt after that.
There were many positives from opening night. The Evergreens running game was effective, as expected, with Brock Babiash leading the team in yardage (12 carries, 84 yds). Ty Strehlow (5 catches, 68 yds) had a stand-out catch in the end zone where he outleaped a Preble defender on third-and-long. The offensive line was dominant from start to finish. Everest defense, especially up front, was stout while occasionally giving up big plays.
Everest needs to clean up the penalties; 11 flags. Two holding calls took touchdowns off the scoreboard, although on both drives the Evergreens overcame the mistakes and scored.
Yet it was Preble who made more mistakes. Two botched punts in the first half were costly, one leading to a safety and the other setting up a short-field touchdown.
Chippewa Falls will be a tougher opponent next week. The Cardinals opened their season with a 40-0 win over Holmen. CHI HI is one of the tougher opponents on the Evergreen’s schedule; they’ll need to move forward to get another win. The game is Thursday, August 26th at 7pm at Stiehm Stadium. Game coverage will begin 6:30pm on THE GAME 93.9 FM and AM-1390.
