MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) — On what was supposed to be Ben Sheets 2000’s bobblehead day at American Family Field the Milwaukee Brewers’ pitching staff worked around nine Nationals hits to help secure a 7-3 win in the series finale.
Starter Adrian Houser allowed 3 of those hits early in the contest and was pulled after securing just ten outs (3.1 innings). He gave way to Hunter Strickland who closed out the 4th with two strikeouts to strand two runners. From there it was 2018 fourth-round draft pick Aaron Ashby and Brad Boxberger who teamed up to pitch three scoreless innings while the offense rallied to send the game into the 9th at 7-1 Milwaukee.
Washington was able to scrape together two runs in the top of the frame before Manager Craig Counsell called upon Josh Hader who faced one batter and recorded the all-important 27th out via a groundout by Juan Soto to end the game.
Kolten Wong and Christian Yelich once again led the offense with two hits each for the Brewers. Wong’s total included a solo homer in the first inning, his tenth of the season. Lorenzo Cain added a two-run shot in the 7th.
Milwaukee now sits at 76-49 on the season and owns a 7.5 game lead on the Cincinnati Reds for first place in the NL Central. They’ll begin a three-game home set with the Reds on Tuesday before heading west on I-94 to take on the Minnesota Twins next weekend.
