SCHOFIELD, WI (WSAU) — A 30-year-old man has been charged with a misdemeanor count of animal mistreatment in the death of a family cat. Other family members say that’s not punishment enough.
Andrew Gehr was arrested after police were called to a residence on Robb St on August 22nd. The cat was found in a shed with horrific injuries including an eye popped out of its socket.
Police say that Gehr had sent his daughter out of the room and then beat the cat and hid him in the shed. He then helped his girlfriend search for the cat for days afterward, pretending he knew nothing about it.
Faced with blood and urine evidence in the cat’s bedding, Gehr admitted to “punching” the cat weeks earlier. He was then arrested.
The cat was taken to a vet and then euthanized after its injuries were determined to be devastating- including total blindness and a loss of brain function.
Gehr is being held on a signature bond and a probation hold from another case. His next court date is October 4th.
Friends of the family plan to protest march at the courthouse calling for a stiffer charge for Gehr.
