STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — UPDATED: 3:00 PM- The subject involved in the police standoff on Water Street in Stevens Point has been arrested.
Police initially had ended negotiations with the subject, identified as Jeffrey Grenlie, for consideration of his own safety. Grenlie had been making suicidal threats, so officers thought it best to leave the scene and arrest him at another time.
They were able to take him into custody shortly after clearing the scene.
Police say they believe the suicidal comments may have been due to the heavy police presence at the scene. Officers from the Stevens Point PD, Plover PD, State Patrol, and Portage County Sheriff’s office were all involved in the situation.
No further information, including if Grenlie will be charged in connection with the attempted catalytic converter theft that was reported Tuesday morning, were released.
WSAU’s original story on the situation is below:
Police in Stevens Point are responding to an “ongoing, active incident” in the 2500 block of Water Street.
According to officials, it started with a report of a catalytic converter theft in the Town of Plover. That lead to a short chase that ended when the suspect crashed into a house on Prairie Street and fled on foot.
The person was later located on Water Street in Stevens Point, and according to police they’ve climbed onto the roof of a home and are suicidal.
Officers are on the scene attempting to de-escalate the situation, and they are continuing to encourage the public to avoid the area if possible.
