SAN FRANCISCO, CA (WSAU) — A four-run 8th inning lifted the San Francisco Giants to a 5-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday afternoon.
Jace Peterson brought home the lone run for the Brewers in the 4th on a line drive to center field. That scored Luis Urias, but also ended the inning as Christian Yelich was then thrown out at 3rd base.
From there the game stayed tied at 1 until a Darin Ruff double brought home Kris Bryant. That was followed by a three-run tater from 3rd baseman Thairo Estrada.
Milwaukee did start the top of the 9th with a single from Kolten Wong, but he was stranded when the next three batters went down in order.
The Brewers managed just five hits in the game including a double from Urias and Luke Maile. Christian Yelich went 0-3 but did draw the lone walk issued by the Giants pitching.
No Brewers player had more than one hit in the game.
Eric Lauer went 7 innings and scattered three hits and one earned run in the start but got a no-decision. Devin Williams allowed all four runs in the 8th and was charged with the loss.
Brewers manager Craig Counsell was ejected in the 9th inning.
Despite the loss, Milwaukee took 3 of 4 from the Giants in the matchup of Postseason contenders. The Brewers now sit at 82-53 on the season going into a three-game weekend set with St. Louis.
Milwaukee’s magic number to clinch the NL Central Division Championship and avoid the NL Wildcard game is 18, meaning any combination of 18 wins by the Crew and losses by the second-place team, currently the Cincinnati Reds, would give the Brewers the title.
The Cardinals and Cubs remain alive in the division title race as well. Pittsburgh has been eliminated in both the division and wildcard races.
