TOWN OF STETTIN, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — Officials say a Chlorine Dioxide spill brought HAZMAT crews to Central Transport in the Town of Stettin Thursday night.
The incident sent at least one person to the hospital and brought in crews from as far away as Eau Claire to process and clear the scene. The first crews arrived at around 5:30, and by about 10:30 PM the coast was clear.
Wausau Battalion Chief Kraig Kruzan told WAOW-TV, “We sent teams in to analyze the chemical…the chemical is deemed safe at this point. It is mitigated and we are currently awaiting a crew to come clean it up.”
That crew arrived from Eau Claire at about 9:30 PM to ensure the area was safe and remained there into the night.
The Marathon County Sheriff’s Department says in a Facebook post, “There are no threats to the public or surrounding community. The effected area is restricted to the building and parking lot.”
The name of the person who was hospitalized and the nature of the chemical spill has not been released.
