MADISON, WI (WSAU) – The Wisconsin Badgers opened their season with a 16-10 loss to Penn State.
Wisconsin got into the red zone twice in the 4th quarter trailing by 6. They were turned away both times. The Badgers last chance at a winning touchdown came with 10 seconds remaining. Earlier in the drive quarterback Graham Mertz fumbled at the 5-yard line and was called for intentional grounding while avoiding a sack with no timeouts remaining. Wisconsin’s final play was an interception in the end zone by Penn State’s Jaquan Brisker.
The door was left open for the Badgers when Penn State missed an extra point after scoring the go-ahead touchdown.
Wisconsin dominated in total yardage and time of possession. They were hurt by three turnovers.
Wisconsin’s transfer running back Chez Mellusi carried for 121 yards and a touchdown.
Wisconsin plays Eastern Michigan next Saturday night in Madison.
