We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago…….
It’s rare when an album can have a top 5 hit on it and still not even sniff the charts. Such was the case of the debut, self-titled LP from Jonathan Edwards in 1971.
You certainly remember his big fat hit….
But the rest of the album is a perfectly acceptable example of the early 70’s singer-songwriter genre. He sings a bunch of acoustic tunes in a fine voice reminiscent of an early Dan Fogelberg (who wouldnt make an appearance for another year). His guitar playing is a cut above some others and he adds some fine harmonica on a few tracks.
The instrumentation is spare although keyboardist Jef Labes, Bill Keith on banjo and Stuart Schulman on violin add some nice touches on some of the tunes.
I particularly like the song “Shanty” (“lay around the shanty and get a good buzz on” indeed). And the second single “Train of Glory” which did not chart.
He actually recorded a bunch of albums through the years..did some acting..and still tours occasionally to this day.
I’ll admit this is one I missed out on with the exception of the hit. If you liked early Fogelberg or the Eagles first LP…you’ll dig this.
