STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — More public input sessions will be held regarding the redesign of Division Street/Business 51 in Stevens Point.
Mayor Mike Wiza said after Monday’s City Council meeting, where the 30% design phase was approved, it became obvious that some people were still blindsided by the plans. “[It seems] we haven’t yet had enough public input. Some business owners claimed they didn’t know about it. I don’t know how that’s possible, but I’m sure it is,” said Mayor Wiza.
Wiza adds that the city has distributed flyers to those along the street and also used its website and social media channels to promote the project, while also working with media partners to bring awareness to the change. He adds that many may have gotten the impression that Monday’s vote set plans in stone, when in fact there’s still a lot more discussion to be had on the matter.
“We can still talk about raised medians and driveway access, but the general concept is something that the Council is comfortable with. That is a lane conversion, reducing the number of travel lanes from four to three and in some cases adding bike lanes,” said Wiza.
All that said, the time to make your voice heard is now if you are a resident with a stake in the busy street. “As you move closer to completion big changes become very difficult and little changes become increasingly difficult. What AECOM is going to do is start surveying things out and getting things laid down in a plan. So if you want a driveway moved- that’s not as big of a deal as you want to re-route the intersection at Patch and Division, for example.”
Dates have not been set for any additional input sessions. In the meantime, Wiza says residents can contact their Alders or the city streets department to provide input, which will be passed along to the engineers for consideration. Residents should also monitor the city’s social media channels and website for updates on any further input sessions.
