We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago……
They were one of the quintessential American bands of the late 60’s but by late 1971 Quicksilver Messenger Service was a shadow of its former self. They released their sixth album called “Quicksilver”. Original members John Cipollina and David Freiberg had left after the last LP as had keyboard whiz Nicky Hopkins. They would be gone until the band reunited in 1975 for a very good LP called “Solid Silver”. I played a track called “Gypsy Lights” way too much in the fall and winter of 1975-76 on WWSP 90fm.
Even though the band seemed to be playing out the string they still had a few decent things up their sleeve. Dino Valenti is still around and writes & sings most of this stuff. The guitar work of Gary Duncan is still here and shines on songs like the aptly named “Play My Guitar” along with “The Truth”. The band does a song called “Fire Brothers” that hearkens back to their Bay Area psychedelic days and goes nicely acoustic on “Out Of My Mind”
It isn’t their best work but you can put this on and remember when this band could put you in that certain frame of mind….
