CHEQUAMEGON, WI (WSAU-WXPR) – The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest wants to hear your ideas for projects.
Through the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act, the forest has nearly $670,000 to spend on projects.
It’s seeking proposals for them.
Adam Felts is the Special Authorities Program Manager for the forest. He says the projects have to protect, restore, or enhance ecosystems, fish and wildlife habitat, or other natural resources. “With that, you want to keep in mind at least 50%, this is in the law, 50% of all projects are to be used for projects that are primarily dedicated to road maintenance, road decommissioning or road obliterating, or for restoration of streams and watersheds.”
Anyone considering a proposal is encouraged to reach out to their local forest office before submitting an idea to make sure it meets the requirements. Felts says getting community input on projects helps keep the forest aligned with the local communities. “As well as to endorse and continue to grow our appreciation to the natural resources in the area and move the Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest towards desired conditions to how we want to see our forests and our beautiful Northwoods to shine.”
Proposals are due by November 12th.
