STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The Associated Press is reporting that Stevens Point Senator Patrick Testin is planning to announce a run for Lieutenant Governor this weekend.
Testin reportedly filed the paperwork this week and is planning an official announcement on Sunday. If so, he becomes the second major candidate on the Republican ticket for Lieutenant Governor.
Earlier this week Ben Voelkel, a former aid to US Senator Ron Johnson, announced he would run. Lancaster, WI Mayor David Varnam is also running.
Testin represents the 24th Senate district which covers all of Portage County along with portions of Wood, Adams, and Waushara Counties. He first won election to the Senate in 2016 and won re-election in 2020 by defeating former Stevens Point City Clerk Paul Piotrowski by eight points.
Former Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch is the big name at the top of the Governor’s race for next year. Businessman Jonathan Wichmann is also in the race, while State Assemblyman John Macco is considering a run.
Democrat Tony Evers is running for re-election, though has remained mum on who his running mate will be. Current Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes is running for Wisconsin’s US Senate seat currently held by Johnson.
