SCHOFIELD, WI (EVERYTHING EVERGREENS-93.9 FM THE GAME) – Before each season begins, most high school football teams hold a team meeting. Captains are chosen. Team goals are written down on the white board.
As the season unfolds, it’s much more likely that goals will be crossed off as ‘not met’. Things happen during a sports season. There are heartbreaking losses. There are unexpected injuries. Certainly the Evergreens have had their share of both this season.
But one of the obvious team goals is to repeat as Valley Football Association – West champions this year. Everest won all four of their divisional games last season. Many of those victories were lopsided.
One team that didn’t factor into the equation is SPASH, which played spring football last season. (That decision was made for them by the Portage County Parks 7 Rec Department, which decided that SPASH’s home field would be closed last fall because of COVID.) The last time Everest and SPASH met, a 42-6 Evergreens win in October of 2019, SPASH was a young team that didn’t play very well that night. There is probably no team that benefitted from Spring football earlier this year than the Panthers. They arrive with a 5-1 record; their only loss is to perennial powerhouse Kimberly in week one.
SPASH will want to throw more than in recent years. Everest’s pass rush and defensive secondary have been solid this year. Everest can win with their back-up quarterback Jack Bobinski. He’ll be more productive with another game under his belt and another week of practice with the starting offense.
The Evergreens could still defend their league title if they win their remaining three games. A loss to Stevens Point probably means putting a line through that team goal.
