MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) — A two-RBI single from Eduardo Escobar held up as the Brewers scored a 2-1 win over the New York Mets and moved one game away from earning the NL Central title and a bye into October’s NLDS.
Escobar’s run-scoring hit came in the third inning, bringing home Willy Adames and Avisail Garcia. He finished the day 2-3, the only Brewer with multiple hits.
Javier Baez brought home the lone run for the Mets in the 4th, a base hit to score Michael Conforto.
Corbin Burnes (11-4) went 7.0 innings and scattered 5 hits to earn the win and bolster his Cy Young resume. Brad Boxberger allowed just one hit in the 8th to earn his 23rd hold of the season, Josh Hader nailed down his 34th save with a walk and a strikeout.
The Brewers honored radio play-by-play voice Bob Uecker before the game- he’s wrapping up his 50th season behind the microphone for the club. Both Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett issued proclamations declaring Saturday “Bob Uecker Day” in the state and city, and several Brewers legends returned for Saturday’s game to honor Ueck. The team also presented the broadcaster with a custom pair of “Air Uecker” shoes that read “one of us” to honor his place in the team’s history. They also featured several of Uecker’s signature calls such as “get up get out of here” and “just a bit outside.”
Milwaukee’s magic number to clinch the division title sits at 1, meaning either a win on Sunday or a loss by the Cardinals will give them the all-important bye into the Division Series. If that neither of those scenarios happen, then the two teams could settle the division during a three-game series beginning Tuesday.
