MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) — For the first time in recent memory, the Milwaukee Brewers have clinched a division title at home.
Mid-season acquisition Willy Adames belted a two-run homer and Eduardo Escobar recorded two RBI as the Brewers downed the Mets 8-4 to claim the Central Division title at American Family Field.
Adames and Lorenzo Cain each finished the game with two hits. Six of the eight Brewers runs in the game were earned.
Freddy Peralta earned his 10th win of the season despite allowing four runs in 5.1 innings. Brent Suter finished off the 6th to earn a hold and the trio of Aaron Ashby, Devin Williams, and Josh Hader finished the job over the final three innings.
Hader slammed the door shut with two strikeouts and a flyout in the 9th. He was not credited with a save, as the Brewers were leading by more than three runs when he entered.
The Brewers took care of their own business to win the title after being swept by St. Louis in a four-game set last week. The Cardinals have shown no signs of slowing down since, winning their 16th game in a row on Sunday with a 4-2 result.
It’s the third division title in franchise history. Milwaukee is now guaranteed a spot in the NLDS, and will likely be the #2 seed in the bracket against the champion of the NL East.
With 101 wins the San Francisco Giants are all but locked in as the #1 seed in the National League.
Milwaukee will enjoy an off day on Monday then try again to slow down the St. Louis train with a three-game set starting on Tuesday. They wrap up the season with three against the Dodgers next weekend.
