WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The adoptive mother of a five-year-old who died as the result of traumatic injuries is now being charged with felony counts of first-degree reckless homicide and child neglect in the case.
Sumitra Stolp was in a Marathon County courtroom today where formal charges were filed. Doctors say the child suffered significant brain and skull injuries and also showed elevated levels of medication including Tylenol and alcohol.
Investigators say Stolp initially told them the child had injured herself on the playground. However, she later told police she had been rocking the child in a chair then dropped her on the floor when she got up. Stolp said she tripped and fell on the girl.
The five-year-old spent over a week in a medically induced coma before she was pronounced dead in late August.
Jonathan faces lesser counts of child neglect and obstructing an officer. Both are jailed on bond and have been ordered to have no contact with either other.
The Stolp’s adopted the child in July and had been caring for her since January.
