We continue our look at the music of 50 years ago……
You know the voice….whether its from the McDonalds McRib commercial “Chomp”…or his catchy little ditty about a gal named Polk Salad Annie that hit the charts a few years earlier. Tony Joe White sounds like just what he is…a good ole Southern boy who grew up on a cotton farm in Louisiana. He also came to our attention for writing the soul classic “Rainy Night In Georgia” which was a hit for Brook Benton in 1970. Elvis did Polk Salad Annie too.
In 1971 he released his fourth LP but first for Warner Brothers. It didnt have any hits but was filled with the funky, swampy music he was known for. It’s got a bunch of his catchy guitar fills and and also has Mike Utley on keyboards ( he would later join Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band) and the Memphis Horns are here too.
The LP is produced by Peter Asher. White would really never reach the heights of Polk Salad Annie again although he would record some really good LPs for decades and had a mini-comeback in the 90’s,writing ‘Steamy Windows” for Tina Turner.
But it always comes back to the voice…..dripping with bayou saw-grass and gator droppings….they didn’t call him the “Swamp Fox” for nothing.
I apologize…I couldnt find all of the LP in one place so you get each song seperately this time.
