WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Schofield man accused of animal abuse after a family pet was found dead will have a one-day jury trial on December 21st.
Andrew Gehr is accused of a misdemeanor charge of intentionally mistreating animals, with a repeat modifier. According to police, he beat a cat to the point of “horrific injuries” including an eye that had popped out of its socket. He then hid the cat in a shed and helped family members look for him for two days- pretending he knew nothing about the incident.
He later admitted to “punching” the cat and was arrested. The animal was later put down after a checkup showed total blindness and a loss of brain function.
In the meantime, Gehr will return to court for a pre-trial conference on October 15th. He’s being held on bond.
Family members have called the misdemeanor charge against Geher too lenient and have called for a stiffer charge against him- including protesting outside the Marathon County Courthouse during his court dates.
