STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — Goerke Park in Stevens Point will get a new FieldTurf surface thanks to a $500,000 contribution from the city.
It’s part of a $2 million improvement plan for the facility, which is run by the city and used by both the UWSP and SPASH football teams.
Of those funds, $200,000 is coming from the Tourism Commission.
The Stevens Point Mayor said they also hope to make organizational and amenity updates. All of the changes will be made to improve the facilities and allow them to be more accessible for a variety of sporting events that bring people to the area. “Every community wants to have the highest quality sporting venues that they can get. And Goerke Park and Community Stadium, are really that keystone for Stevens Point,” said Mike Wiza, Stevens Point Mayor.
The city’s contribution will be paid out over 10 years. The rest of the money will be fundraised.
The current FieldTurf surface was installed in 2008. The life span of those surfaces is around 15 years.
