WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Former President Donald Trump has released a statement nudging Sean Duffy to run for the state’s highest office.
Duffy, the former 7th Congressional District Representative, has largely stayed out of the political spotlight since resigning his seat in 2019. Though sources say he’s considering a run for Governor after some time away.
“[Duffy] would be fantastic! A champion athlete, Sean loves the people of Wisconsin, and would be virtually unbeatable,” said Trump in a statement on Sunday.
Duffy and his wife Rachel Campos-Duffy have reportedly been living in New Jersey to be closer to her job with FOX News. Though WisPolitics.com says they have maintained an address somewhere in the Badger state.
Wis Politics adds that Duffy still has over $2 million in his federal election fund.
“They are both doing very well, so this would be a big sacrifice, but hopefully it will be a sacrifice that will be made for the Great State of Wisconsin and its wonderful, hardworking people,” Trump added.
So far just one prominent Republican has their foot in the race for Governor in 2022. That’s former Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch, who announced her candidacy earlier this fall. Businessman Jonathan Wichmann is also in the race.
State Representative John Macco and former US Senate Candidate Kevin Nicholson are also said to be considering runs.
Duffy’s name has been mentioned off and on but until now he hasn’t been seen as a serious candidate.
Duffy resigned his position to spend more time with his family after his wife gave birth to their 9th child who would require special medical attention due to a heart issue that was discovered in the womb.
