WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — Wausau School District enrollment is on the rise for the year, but the possibility of merging schools is on the table.
That could include merging elementary schools as well as combining Wausau West and Wausau East.
As discussed at the board’s meeting Monday, 9th and 10th graders would attend one school, and 11th and 12th graders would attend the other.
The district says because of enrollment differences at the high schools, students are not getting the same educational experiences.
A survey revealed the public would mostly be on board with the changes; 65% would be in favor of combining high schools, and 56% said they’d support merging two or more elementary schools.
The district has looked at merging elementary schools before, but prior attempts fell through due to backlash and failed referendums.
No firm decision was made at the meeting. The district is planning two community engagement sessions to discuss this matter along with district-wide maintenance issues during community engagement sessions to be held on Thursday at 5 PM again on November 8th. Both sessions will be held at the John Muir Middle School.
