WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Both the Everest Metro PD and Wausau PD have released some more information on an incident that started in Schofield and ended with an overturned ambulance in Downtown Wausau.
According to the Everest Metro PD, they were called to a pedestrian versus vehicle crash on Grand Avenue near Cawley Street. According to investigators, a man identified as Peter MaComber was hit by a northbound vehicle and required medical transport.
He was taken from the scene by Riverside Ambulance up Grand Avenue and into Downtown Wausau. After the ambulance turned onto Scott Street heading west, it was involved in a crash at the First Street intersection.
According to a release from Wausau PD, the ambulance was driving in emergency mode en route to Aspirus Wausau when it was hit by a northbound vehicle coming from First Street.
First responders on the scene say the 72-year-old MaComber was pronounced dead. Investigators are still working to determine what caused his death.
Other injuries were reported in the incident, but none are believed to be life-threatening.
Police say the driver of the ambulance was cited for not stopping at a red light. The incident shut down the Scott Street bridge for a few hours on Wednesday, re-routing traffic looking to cross the Wisconsin River to Bridge Street.
