MATTOON, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – A vacant school in Mattoon will soon be home to community outreach and support groups.
Formerly Mattoon Elementary school, the building outside Antigo is now the Shepherd’s Watch Community Center.
The nonprofit organization plans on converting the school to utilize the space for its gymnasium, public library with internet access, food pantry and local coffee shop.
“It’s in your heart I guess with my Christian values and morals…we have an opportunity in life here, at one time on this earth,” said Wade Reimer Shepherd’s Watch President. “That we want to follow and try to help more of the nurturing families and some the families that are less privileged than ourselves.”
The Christian non-profit hopes to bring education back to the school in two years and create a religious Wisconsin choice program in Mattoon. Many parents have been hoping for a school option, as the Antigo School District has been in a long-running debate about elementary school enrollment in rural areas.
