MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Graham Mertz accounted for three touchdowns as Wisconsin topped Iowa 27-7 to claim the Heartland Trophy and a win on Homecoming 2021 at Camp Randall.
The Badger QB finished with 11 completions for 104 yards and one touchdown to no interceptions and also called his own number twice from one-yard out to close out scoring drives in the second and 4th quarter.
Braelon Allen led the rushing attack with 104 yards and a 5.2 yards per carry average. Danny Davis III was the leading receiver in the game with 5 catches for 59 yards
Jake Ferguson recorded three catches for 13 yards and the game’s lone passing TD for the Badgers.
Wisconsin built a 20-0 lead at halftime before the Hawkeyes would punch in their only score of the game in the 3rd.
Iowa, who had been ranked as high as #2 in the AP Top 25 this season, falls to 6-2 and will likely see their #11 ranking drop yet again when the new poll is released this afternoon. Wisconsin moves to 5-3 on the season and 3-2 in Big Ten play.
Purdue, Wisconsin, and Iowa all sit in a tie for second in the B1G West division at 3-2 in league play. Minnesota currently holds the top spot at 4-1. The Badgers and Gophers will renew their rivalry in the regular-season finale on November 27th
The Badgers will travel to New Jersey next weekend to take on Rutgers at SHI Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2:30 PM with pregame coverage beginning at 12:30 on WSAU. Wisconsin returns home to play Northwestern on November 13th.
